The IRC in Charlottesville is committed to bringing our beneficiaries from harm to home. As a part of that commitment, we provide them with necessities they will need to start rebuilding their lives here. To do this, the IRC relies on donated items from community partners that are passed into the hands of our beneficiaries free of charge either through our Resettlement Store or as part of an initial apartment setup.

With new families arriving at a break-neck pace, the IRC in Charlottesville has temporarily housed several Afghan families in hotels in Waynesboro. IRC Volunteers in Waynesboro organized to welcome these families, offering English instruction, outings exploring the community, and friendship.

The IRC offices in Virginia are updating their policy for accepting new resettlement cases applying for services under the Afghan Placement and Assistance Program (APA).

After more than 15 years, this week we say goodbye to the Michie Building and move across town to a larger space as our staff continues to grow to meet the increased need.

The IRC will expand the scope of the HOME program outside of the immediate Charlottesville and Richmond area to other communities in Central Virginia. We are seeking the support of faith and civic groups to co-sponsor a family; working alongside the IRC, setting up their apartment, collecting donations for the family, helping them to learn English and navigate their new community.

New Roots is a multi-faceted agriculture and food initiative that works in partnership with refugees and other New Americans to support their health, community connections, and household economics through nutrition education, gardening, land-based micro-business development, and other wellness and educational activities.
