Virtual volunteer information session

Start date: Ongoing

Join us for an informational volunteer orientation session to learn more about the refugee resettlement process, the work of the IRC in Seattle, and the many ways you can get involved

Volunteer process

  1. Review our current available volunteer positions. Please note volunteer needs and current openings change regularly.

  2. RSVP to our next virtual orientation session. At orientation you’ll learn about the refugee resettlement process, the work of the IRC in Seattle, and the many ways you can get involved as a volunteer.

  3. After you’ve attended a volunteer orientation session, complete a volunteer application and sign up for a phone interview with our Volunteer Coordinator.

  4. Complete a background check. The IRC kindly requests that volunteers contribute $35 toward the cost of this requirement. For positions that involve driving, a driving background check and proof of valid license and insurance are also required.

  5. You're ready to get started! You'll receive further training from your department. In the case of in-home tutors and career mentors, you’ll be contacted when a program participant is ready to be matched with a volunteer.

Additional things to note

Most long-term volunteer positions require a 3-month commitment of 4 hours/week during IRC office hours (M-F, 9am-5pm). These volunteer opportunities take place in South King County, where the majority of IRC’s program participants live.

If a long-term volunteer role is not feasible for you, consider signing up for our “on-call” volunteer team by emailing [email protected] or supporting newcomers in other ways. Check out our list of 10 ways to help refugee families in Washington for ideas.

If you are interested in providing pro-bono services or volunteering your professional skills outside of a typical volunteer role, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected].
